Hello!

You've stumbled upon the mundane banter that is my lj. Congratulations!

You may notice that it seems as if I either haven't posted since I arrived in Belgium or will not post for another eighteen years. Well, neither of these assumptions are true. In fact, at some point, I stupidly decided to change the date of my journal to one far in the future. I have since stopped doing so, and thus, dear reader, if you would like to read my most recent postings, you just need to find the one from the most recent date to the present time.

Thanks!

[mood | food obsession]
[music |nix]

I am free-wielding the kids on my own this weekend, meaning that I have decided to be "cool nanny" and do things like rent videos and take the kids mountain biking. I also made pizzas from scratch with them and let them adorn their own. If anything, I've decided that I'm going to win them over with food!

Also, right now, they're all watching X-MEN for the third time in 24 hours. I used to do this all the time. What is up with kids and repetition?
I think if I stared at Magneto or Storm or effing Wolverine one more time right now, I'd probably throw something extremely hard at the screen. Or maybe even turn into a mutant!

Next weekend I'm going to visit Courtney and Anne in Paris, which will be, no matter what, utterly stupendous. This is because, (a) I miss both these rad girls a lot, (b) I haven't gone wild in almost a month, (c) PARIS, (d) I get to take a train (which makes me feel old movie-ish)!

Also, thanks to the kids' video game obsession, I have come up with a excellent (or bad) idea for an art project. I just need to find a camera-phone. And some pliable friends.

--EDIT--
Looking down at my tupperware, I just now realised that scrawled on top of the container, in my mother's writing, it says, "garbage soup Feb. 05".

[mood | apathetic]

Today consisted of:

1)Being shut in by the rain and being unable to buy thousands and thousands of dollars worth of tickets to shows I want to go to (alone).

2)Going to the pool with my kids and being hit on by an old floppy lifeguard who misinterpreted what I was saying and launched into a massive speel about being a single dad. Sad, but also gross. He wanted to have a playdate, like with the kids, and also with "us". I don't understand. I was in my bathing suit and this was totally the wierdest.

3)Not taking shit from the kids when they're being little assholes.

4)Stepping in dog poop, which is a problem of extraordinary scale in this city.

5)Feeling incredibly hung-over, until now (9pm).

Tomorrow should be better. I go to language school, which is always funny. I can talk to my two friends in the class, a Czech housewife and a 15 year old Iranian boy. They're both really cool, especially the boy as he spends most of his time in utter silence, drawing snakes. The czech housewife is utterly brilliant at knock knock jokes. That kind of thing.

Also, tomorrow I get to sit around on a patio at the country club for a few hours drinking scotch and cokes and waiting for the kids to finish their field hockey practice. This is always the real height of my work week, because (a) they pay for my drinks, and (b) I get to read for two hours in the sun with no chance of disruprtion.

The people weren't murderers or after my diamonds, but they did take me to a bar in the forest (imagine my vaguely petrified expression as their car made a right turn into dark and deeply wooded parkland). BUT RATHER! THEY WERE TOTALLY CUTE BOURGIES! I drew a lot of really drunk maps of Vancouver.

ALSO, congratulations to Jake and Altaira on the aquisition of their new place. HOORAH.

And, for the Stong people, HOMECOMING. boo hoo! I suggest that everybody I know, no matter what, goes to Kingston next year and partakes in the stupidity and amazement which is this one-off weekend. I mean, this is probably the best time ever. Ever. I have never felt like crying, laughing, shouting, and vomitting simultaneously more than at Queen's Homecoming. I am really interested to see how it has panned out this year.

Yesterday, I met a man (let's call him Bruno) in the park whose head was probably a 1/4 the size of a normal head. He told me that he used to play for the boston bruins. He said the phrase, 'Indian Summer!' about 4 times in the course of 2 minutes. He also had three TOTALLY CUTE little fat dogs at his side. He was also about 65.

HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS IN BELGIUM!
Yesterday, the man who changed the sim card in my cell phone called me and asked if I wanted to go for a drink with him on Friday. From what I gathered, he wants to take his GIRLFRIEND to VANCOUVER on HOLIDAY, and wants me to TELL HIM ALL ABOUT IT. Now, consider...
1) He got my number off my cell phone contract.
2) I never actually TOLD him that I was from Vancouver, so he must have read it on my passport and made a mental note.

Good thing for him that I'm lonely and have been going to bed at 9pm around here (either that, or I should stop being so paranoid about con-artists and start assuming that this little Belgian man is really as adorable and earnest as he seems to be! FOR SHAME!)

Dear Everything!

Hello from Belgium. I can't quite remember the primary motivation for me wanting to come here (oh yeah, no other ideas), but thankfully it's all working out okay. Yesterday, I had one of those, 'oh fuck what is wrong with me?' kind of days, but today is much, much better!

Anyway, I thought I might impart a bit of information about this wierd place...

#1: The Flemish hate the French-Belgians, and the French-Belgians hate everybody!

The second: All Belgians love festivals. They have them almost everyday, and each one is even cuter than the last. Yesterday I stumbled upon one called Les Festival des Geants (the festival of giants), which is basically an excuse to make massive papier-mache puppets (10 feet tall) of national heros, which are mainly cartoon characters, as the case may be. The puppets dance around to vaguely cuban-sounding brass bands, who themselves are dressed up in medieval rags. It's FUCKING AMAZING.

Thrice is Nice! = A great deal of Belgians still seem to believe strongly in Colonialism, which is both curious and alarming. Everywhere you look on Sundays, there is someone trying to sell you ivory, and bookstores are jam-packed wíth stories of glorious conquests and discoveries abroad. I also saw a massive wall mural depicting TinTin (national hero #1) dressed in safari gear and chasing african warriors in a jeep (and to think I dressed up as him for Halloween).

Finally, this is an open appeal for letters! PLEASE SEND ME MAIL AND IN RETURN I WILL SEND YOU LOTS AND LOTS BACK, PROMISE.

oh, and RIP September 11th

Well alright, here we go. I can do this. BYE BYE VANCOUVER, CANADA. YOU MESSED MY LIFE UP, BUT YOU ARE STILL RAD, BAD, AND BEAUTIFUL. NEVER CHANGE (well maybe a little bit).

I cannot get over how much I've become obsessed with planet alignment lately. Is wierd stuff happening to just everybody? Geez louise! It seems like simply everybody I know is somehow getting kicked in the face, or their face is facing a change.

Annddd...just take a look at this for a second:
This amazing thing is a note I found on the track beside the football field across the street from my Parent's house. The man who takes care of the field is the football coach, I guess named Rick, and he really is an ASSHOLE. I have sat awake at night more than a few times contemplating burning "fuck you, penis" with acid into the grass, so you can imagine my glee when I found this sprinkler soaked letter lying conspicuously on the ground next to one of Rick's "KEEP OFF THE FIELD" signs.

[mood | my arm feels so light!]
[music |Josephine Foster]

My cat just emerged from a cupboard looking guilty. While it's no secret that I don't love her as much as I love my dog (I can't lie about this), I really appreciate how she can be found in the most ridiculous and surprising places. I once found her in a mostly shut dresser drawer. Another time she was was sleeping on the stove. I often find her in the 6 inch crack between my bed and my wall. You get the idea. It's a bit difficult to articulate what her life is like, other than the simple fact that, as an indoor cat, she sleeps about 23 hours a day.

Anyway, life is wierd right now. I'm moving out of my parent's house for my last month or so in Vancouver, for two reasons:
1) My brothers are disgusting.
2) I need "me" time.

Around the end of June I was feeling so, so good. Everything was effing amazing and I was just so jazzed about the world. Then, in the course of about 2 days, I totalled my bike, broke my arm (by way of totalling my bike), found out I need to get a root canal, lost my job, and experienced a number of minor disappointments which led to a sizeable downer on my part for the next couple of weeks. Now, with the cast off my arm, the knowledge that I'm getting crunk tonight, the anticipation of moving out on Saturday, and the pride in knowing that I'm trying to make art, I'm feeling much, much better. A new leaf has turned over. So, as a result, I'm going to characteristically make a couple lists!

Things to Accomplish from now till September:
-make thousands and thousands of dollars by making paintings and selling them.
-writie and send more letters.
-read inspiring and challenging works of literature.
-watch less MTV Canada and Much More Music.
-take long baths.
-start riding my bike everywhere again (YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!)
-make contact and re-befriend people that I like a lot but never seem to find time to see.
-go swimming more.
-go on trips to visit friends who live slightly out of reach.
-eat so much good fruit (cherries cherries cherries and bluebs).
-keep making crafts!
-cook dinner for all the beautiful people.

Top Fruits:
1) Cherries: FLAVOUR EXPLOSION!
2) Blueberries
3) Apples
4) Mangoes
5) Grapes
6) Strawberries
7) Oranges
8) Apricots
9) Bananas
10) Honeydew...a close tie to Watermelon, which also receives an honourable mention, but has failed because it stained my favourite shirt yesterday. For shame!

Go summer!

[music |brightback morning light]

Wow, hey.
Livejournal, what's been up these past months?

Today, as I was watching my daily dose of the Cosby Show while eating all-bran, I heard the dull thump of the mail hitting our front entrance and went to go get it. Two things came for me. One was the letter that I'd sent to Kristina, in a plastic bag, with instructions on how not to send mail. Oops. I'll begrudgingly send that out again tomorrow, so please forgive me Kristina for the now rather dated letter you're about to recieve in the mail. The other piece of paper was a letter from Revenue Canada telling me about the results of my tax return, but, characteristic to my life lately, there was no actual cheque inside. WTF.

Anyway, long in the short of it, SEND ME YOUR ADDRESSES and I, in return, will send you this address back on an envelope containing fun things like foreign currency, feathers, and letters!

Now, I think I'll make a list of all the things which are so, so great in my life right now!

1)My dog, and how spectacular and smart he is. Today he actually curled right up in my lap and pointed his nose at my face, smiling. I melted. He also pulls my covers off my bed to wake me up in the morning.

2)My new bike. Which is actually an old bike, my father's to be precise. Even though it's fairly common to hear about bike riders being flipped over bridges or hit by buses in this city, it is also the best and most beautiful way to get around. Hence, I have decided to make it my day-off mission to fix my Dad's bike and start riding it everywhere. I even bought a new helmet and a "homey" bell, which, if you tap his hand on his little metal baseball hat, will make the most charming little "ding ding" sound.

3)Vancouver. This city is so all-encompassing and amazing. I won't hear anything bad about it. The other day, as I was going over the bridge on the bus and taking in the sunset by my favourite view of the city, a Japanese language student turned to me and said, "This sky, so bruteful. This city, so cruel (but I think she meant beautiful and cool)". I nearly wept.

4)Food! Delicious, as always. I've become really lazy about cooking, so, despite my tight budget, I have taken to eating out all the time which is always surprising. My particular favourite right now is the all-you-can-eat fondue place, where, for about 5 dollars, you can eat chocolate dipped strawberries and pieces of steamed brocolli in cheese to your heart's content.

5)Crunching on boys.

Okay, I've got to make some dinner for my hungry brothers.

Here is my requisite "kill me now, and kill school too" entry.

Seriously, this thing sucks. I worked on a video for, like, two hours, and now this computer has decided to render whatever it is that it's rendering for the past hour.

I'm almost positive that the whole screen is going to explode at any minute, throwing plastic schrapnel (spelling? whatever!) in my face, catapulting my glasses from covering my eyes, and killing me instantly.

OMG two more weeks. Then it's packing, friends, wicked-bad reception, moving day, cottage with gin and a hot-tub (and lots of friends? Come one come all!), toronto, plane, mummy greeting me at the airport in beautiful Vancouver. Life is going to get so good in 14 days.

Things which are making life well worth living these days:

-SUNSHINE, AND WARM CONCRETE PORCHES
-A roof to finally be able to go out on
-shoes with no socks! YIPOPEEE
-snowdrops and the beginnings of crocuses
-not waking up when it's dark outside

THERE ARE SO MANY DOGS WALKIN' AROUND TOWN THESE DAYS. BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY ONES! PUPPIES! On saturday, a tiny and fuzzy golden retriever puppy tried to climb out of it's owner's car toward us, and then when Darryl, John, Graeme and I were eating our dip cones at skeleton park later on, we saw Lou Reed and his sweety dog jumping rope for some neighbourhood girls, THEN we saw every other dog in Kingston ever out with it's people having a walk after that. It was an amazing, glorious day.

Well, Japanada was really fun. There's really no doubt about that...

Doesn't Talie look babelicious in that picture? John has also moved onto his third pair of old Bitsy shoes. Yikes! I dressed up as a Native of the Sea (yeah, me neither). Also, just looking at this pico, doesn't it kind of look like Talie and I are trying to crush John's face, and John is ducking to avoid it? WOOT!
(Thanks Liane for the photo).

On another note, school is confusing me lots and lots these days.

And finally, on a final note: REMINDER REMAINDER, UNION GALLERY, TUES. MARCH 14th to APRIL 1st, RECEPTION: SAT. MARCH 25th 6-8!!!!

What a beatiful weekend!

My room smells actually so disgusting, I found a discarded hot-dog bun in my bed last night, I feel much surlier and dirtier, and I may have alienated some acquaintances, but damn! If this wasn't just the greatest little weekend in January! Kudo's friends! Thanks John and Darryl for giving us all the excuse to go wild.

On this note, I would like to point out some things that are really great right now:

1)stick-on earrings (way less hurty than earrings which carry harmful allergic reactions)
2)suspenders (a charming alternative to a belt)
3)friends ('nuff said, yo.)
4)Oldies 960 AM (a soothing wake up to Marvin Gaye)

And also some things that are NOT great right now:

1)the toilet-licking scum-crotches who live behind us.
2)NOT having a job

Wouldn't it be great if my job was as a professional evictor? Then, I could resolve both things that suck in my life.

[mood | by dogs]

TOP 5 GREATEST TYPES OF DOGS, and why:

#1: Irish Terriers: Obviously, because this is what my beautiful dog Flurry is. He is the wisest, sneakiest, cutest, kindest, sweetest, most amazing dog there is. I don't cry very often, but when I think of this little guy, I well up. Now he has diabetes and this pains me SO MUCH. I LOVE YOU FLUR-FLUR.

#2: Irish Wolfhounds and Great Danes: These dogs are so huge! Both breeds were bred for lying in front of fires all day in big castles, which makes them lazy and good to rest your head on. They are also both supremely majestic dogs, and stride like Black Beauty (a horse). I have only known a few in my life, but think that they are truly the family dog. The best is when they're with little children, who could ride them if they wanted but would never because they're too God-like.

#3: Pugs: When I went to Paris once, I stayed with this old couple that had a pug who slept next to me and snored. He was over the top adorable and used to burrow his head into my side. This breed also gets pity points for being totally overbred, which is a sad thing. If I have many dogs one day, I hope one of them is a pug. These little guys make me smile so hard.

#4: Weimaraners and Visjlas: I have never seen a Visjla before in real life, but I trust Darryl when he says that they are a truly remarkable dog. The former dog in this tie for #4 is a sort of celebrity dog, due to movies such as "Best in Show" and due to William Wegman. If you ever see one of these dogs walking down the street, your head immediatly turns as you exclaim, "what a beauty". They are the Cindy Crawfords (or Tyra Banks' of the dog world.

#5: Bernese Mountain Dogs: I knew one of these named Marny once, who lived a wonderful life over in Whistler, B.C. These dogs are loyal, smart, and have beautiful soft fur. I also fondly remember the end-credits of Courtney, Lena, and Darryl's documentary last year, where one of these beautiful guys rolled around and played with Kirk. They are absolutely the friendliest.

Of course, it is impossible to categorize dogs like this. All dogs are their own person and all dogs have their own amazing individual qualities. I have rarely met a dog that I dislike, nor do I rarely keep walking if I see one on the street. Cherish your dogs, everybody, they are the heart and soul of us all.
